Single Review - The Twilight Sad - Last January

Last January,  the second track to be released from, and the second track on The Twilight Sad's new album, Nobody Wants To Be Here and Nobody Wants To Leave  seamlessly fuses the eerily spacey analogue synths from No One Can Ever Know  with the punchier guitar led sound of their first two albums.  In true Twilight Sad fashion the song mixes their delicate and powerful sides, albeit in a gentler manner than their earlier releases, with the band opting for a long and consistent crescendo, as opposed to the early Mogwai inspired impact of their debut.

Lyrically the song begins with a lack of control and a disturbingly creepy tone, "I see you at night and I stare at you, you don't care for me".  As the layers build with every chorus the tables turn in line with the music before the coda with the lines, "This isn't you that I came here for, this isn't you that I waited for".

The song has been welcome with open arms at the bands recent four-date tour and it is clear why.  All The Twilight Sad trademarks are here, from Andy MacFarlane's reverb drenched bent chords guitar, to Mark Devine's characteristic drum beats and style, and of course James Graham's melodies and lyrics, but as ever the band manage to make a song just as powerful as anything they've released before, and one which still sounds fresh.
